IP Signalling
The use of IP technology is becoming more widespread across a variety of applications and industries. The security industry is no exception. Security systems are changing at an ever-increasing pace and are making more use of standard Information Technology products running over a Local Area Networks (LAN) or Wide Area Networks (WAN) e.g. across the Internet, where they can be remotely monitored and controlled.
IP can often be used to provide a cost-effective means of monitoring security systems by exploiting a companies existing network and enhancing and / or removing the need for dedicated telephone lines, and the associated call charges.
In many systems the option of an alternative path is included, i.e. a system could be designed with Internet Protocol (IP), as a primary link but fall back on to a PSTN line or GPRS connection if the ADSL (Broadband Link) fails in some way. GPRS is one of the more popular options, particularly for intruder alarms where the data sent and received is minimal.
It is most important to discuss the proposals with the company IT manager before commencing installation and preferably during the specification and quotation process. All signalling hardware must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines and fully tested on commissioning. Manufacturers usually offer training courses for IP based signalling products and links to our preferred manufacturer’s websites are provided on their pages on this site.
